Science awesomeness! This is for anyone who still thinks science is out of reach. I love the idea that it is a game, and that everyone can play it, and understand the world better.

Great Reads: A Trader's Tale
I am currently reading A Trader’s Tale, by Nathan Lowell, a space opera about growing up and learning to find a place in the universe. Most space operas deal with the adventures of space cadets in some kind of military organization. Lowell’s books, by contrast, stay away from cliches and provide us with hours of delightful immersion in the world of Ishmael Wong, a charismatic, and...

NYCC
I spent the weekend with my wife at the New York Comic Con. As far as comic book conventions are concerned, I usually attend the one in San Diego, but I have not been able to do so in the past few years for various reasons, so I was exited to finally get some well deserved geek time in New York. The convention was a lot smaller than its San Diego counterpart, but you wouldn’t know it by way...

You are Responsible for Your Own Entertainment
The most important thing my friend Roger ever taught me was that I am responsible for my own entertainment. He taught this to me while we waited for a panel at the San Diego Comic Con. I was bored and whining about it, my complaints must have grown pretty annoying, because he turned around and pretty yelled the saying that would become a dictum for the rest of my life “shut up, damn it! You...

Some Thoughts on Stuff
I’m sitting on the front lawn of my friend’s house, and I’m watching as my possessions fly away in a rush of bargaining and transactions. Each thing that leaves feels like another pound of wasted potential leaving my life forever. Garage sales are a wonderful way to reenergize the systems of your life. More than the few bucks I am making by getting rid of stuff, I enjoy seeing...

Two Great Books about Comics
Here are, in no particular order, two of my all time favorite books about comics:
1) Understanding Comics, by Scott Mccloud.
This one explains why comics are a such an amazing storytelling tool, and it defines them
2) The Ten Cent Plague, by David Hajdu.
This one shows why they are such an important part of America’s cultural heritage, and a beautiful melting pot of talents from all...

So what do you think? Does science fiction have an obligation to be true to science? Is it okay for it to fall in the Space Opera category?
Patience
Some times you’ve got to take your time with things. While it is really easy to spread and disseminate ideas, there are times when you need to hold back and allow them to become fully formed within your mind.
There is no need to try to come up with a brilliant idea every day. Some things take time to grow, and only time can let that happen.
